Run out of BBQ sauce while you are making dinner? You can make this Simple Barbeque Sauce at Home with ingredients in your pantry.
This really is a basic BBQ sauce , much like the Kraft BBQ sauce you might buy at the store. Sometimes that is what you want instead of sriracha, chipotle, Bourbon (eye of newt!) etc.
Having said that you could add a dash or any of the above to taste if you are inclined. This is really about you are at the cottage or making a meal and find out you have run out of BBQ sauce and running to the store is not very convenient.
It takes 15 minutes of simmering for the flavours to meld here but you can do that while you are prepping the rest of the meal.
Sauce will keep a week, sealed in the fridge and you can freeze it and thaw when needed too.
I had it on grilled chicken breasts and pork tenderloin and it was great- perhaps a bit tangier than commercial BBQ sauce - which is a good thing. The tang comes from the addition of hot sauce which is optional but recommended. The 2 tsps recommended in the recipe give it a lively 'tang' but it is not spicy hot.
The recipe also calls for 1 cup of sugar which makes for a rather sweet BBQ sauce. You could easily reduce sugar to ¾ cup if you prefer.
Ingredients
- ½ cup onion minced
- 1 cup cider vinegar
- 1 cup ketchup
- 4 Tbsps mustard
- 1 ½ Tbsps Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup sugar See Note 1
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 Tbsps butter
- 2 tsps hot sauce optional (I used Frank's Hot Sauce)
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer 15 minutes uncovered.
- Allow to cool. (See Note 2)
