I was forever throwing out the last half jar of Hoisin sauce because I never knew a) how long it had been in my fridge and b) how long it would keep. So I am delighted to be able to make my own when I need it.

    What Makes This Recipe Special?

    • You can make this using your microwave in about 10 minutes.
    • If you cook Asian food regularly, you probably have all the ingredients on hand.
    • It is gluten free if you use Tamari instead of regular Soy Sauce. If you are not concerned about gluten you can use either.

    Ingredients

    Hoisin sauce ingredients.
    • Use Tamari sauce if you want gluten free, otherwise regular soy sauce is fine.
    • Molasses- I used regular molasses often called 'fancy'. I think any kind is fine.
    • Rice vinegar is a bit smoother than white vinegar but you can substitute white vinegar if you need to.

    How To Make It

    • Combine all the ingredients except the cornstarch and water in a heat-proof cup. Whisk it to incorporate somewhat.
    • Heat the cup 1 minute on high in the microwave. Stir to smooth it out. Repeat for another minute or so until it is all blended.
    • Add the water to the cornstarch and stir to make a paste.
    • Add the cornstarch mixture to the Hoisin mixture and blend in. Heat a minute at a time, stirring well after each minute until it reaches the consistency you want.

    How to Use It

    • Use it as a dipping sauce for pot stickers or egg rollls.
