Homemade hoisin sauce is so easy to make, you may never buy store-bought again!

Jump to:
I was forever throwing out the last half jar of Hoisin sauce because I never knew a) how long it had been in my fridge and b) how long it would keep. So I am delighted to be able to make my own when I need it.
What Makes This Recipe Special?
- You can make this using your microwave in about 10 minutes.
- If you cook Asian food regularly, you probably have all the ingredients on hand.
- It is gluten free if you use Tamari instead of regular Soy Sauce. If you are not concerned about gluten you can use either.
Ingredients

- Use Tamari sauce if you want gluten free, otherwise regular soy sauce is fine.
- Molasses- I used regular molasses often called 'fancy'. I think any kind is fine.
- Rice vinegar is a bit smoother than white vinegar but you can substitute white vinegar if you need to.
How To Make It
- Combine all the ingredients except the cornstarch and water in a heat-proof cup. Whisk it to incorporate somewhat.
- Heat the cup 1 minute on high in the microwave. Stir to smooth it out. Repeat for another minute or so until it is all blended.
- Add the water to the cornstarch and stir to make a paste.
- Add the cornstarch mixture to the Hoisin mixture and blend in. Heat a minute at a time, stirring well after each minute until it reaches the consistency you want.
How to Use It
- Use it as a dipping sauce for pot stickers or egg rollls.
