If you are familiar with the Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blends of Entre Deux Mers then you have a headstart on picturing the dry style with the minerality of the region. If you are fan of bold Cab Sauvs then you might like this one. John Szabo of winealign.com gives it a 91. He describes it as fragrant with herbs, spice, leather and dried black fruit....and 'complexity off the charts' at this price. Tannins are refined but grippy so perhaps enjoyed best with charcuterie or a meal like Red Wine Braised Beef. He suggests it will drink 2027 or so. (XD - 4 g/L)

Best Buy Red Wines
CLAYHOUSE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2020 Paso Robles, California, USA Vintages #57869 19.95 This 'approachable wine...that will have broad appeal' is full-bodied and smooth. It is rich with oak, coffee, black fruit, vanilla and herbs. Pretty much all you can ask of a Cab, no? Note- this win has scored 88-91 so I am guessing it is a fun? and satisfying pour but don't look for inherent complexities. (XD - 3 g/L)
J. LOHR SEVEN OAKS CABERNET SAUVIGNON Paso Robles, California, USA Vintages #656561 $24.95 According to Vintages Essentials, this is the most popular red wine in their Collection. Look for smoky oak, prune and vanilla. It seems to be an easy pour, full-bodied and smooth and fits the profile you think of for a California Cab. (XD - 3 g/L)
A note on the Feature focus of Paso Robles. I was excited to see this feature because I have fond memories of many outstanding Paso Robles wines. The 2 recommended as Best Buys are the low end of the price and complexity scale. When I researched the others in the release there was a theme that they were too sweet, confected and sometimes stewed or jammy. The high scores listed are outliers with most other reviewers in the high 80s so they don't make for a value proposition. Grant Burge Paso Ink Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 Vintages 37289 $29.95 - I couldn't find any independent wine notes or reviews. It sounds good but I would be taking a flier to recommend it.. I am guessing that I would enjoy a glass of any one of them if offered as a textbook California Cab but I won't be allocating my wine dollars there. So - on to some of the actual enticing value propositions .....
PIATTELLI LUJÁN DE CUYO RESERVE MALBEC 2021 Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina Vintages #452029 $17.95 Tim Atkin of timatkin.com gives this a 92. He says this is a smooth and intense Malbec with 'nuanced oak'. It's a powerful wine with tannins and fruit to take it to 2029. (XD - 3 g/L)
MARQUÉS DE LA CONCORDIA RIOJA-SANTIAGO RESERVA 2018 Rioja, Spain Vintages #37272 $17.95 This is being lauded as 'amazing value' among critics. Enjoy with old Manchego cheeses and Sherried Chicken Thighs. (XD - 2 g/L)
ARNAUD DE VILLENEUVE NO. 153 2022, Rousillon, France Vintages #35967 $18.95

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are LCBO Vintages Releases?
Twice a month the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) releases a selection of special wines they have chosen from around the world. They are not part of the regular stock that is replenished regularly. So if you see something that is good value you need to order it or pick it up while you can.
I am WSET 3 Certified and I use my experience as an LCBO approved media taster to highlight good value wines. I also have the opportunity to taste wines from all over the world as showcased in industry Master Classes and winetastings. See my About page for more details on my experience.
The Best Buy wines I recommend tend to be wines that score 90 or above and are in the $20-$30ish range. I research the wines to see which are scoring consistently in the 90 + range. You can expect these wines to represent the characteristics of their varietal and region well; display some complexity, depth and length. I suggest food pairings for many of the recommendations because... that is what it's all about here at The Wine Lover's Kitchen.
Wines I call 'cheap and cheerful' wines are wines that are hovering around the high 80s to 90 point mark. They are not going to win gold medals in competition but they should be a solid choice for week night sipping or dock or deck sitting. They also make for a good value choice if you are serving a crowd and your lively guests are too busy chatting to discuss the depth and length of their wine!
Premium Wine recommendations are edging up on my $40 limit. They may be 'entry' level wines of prestigious regions or producers. Often cellar worthy and always wines that you want to pay attention to when you serve them to ensure you appreciate their complexities!
The $40 is a rather arbitrary level, but if you are spending more then $40 routinely on a bottle of wine then you are probably a wine enthusiast doing your own research.

New to this page but have been looking for something similar for a while so many thanks. The 3 rings cab is an absolute triumph. I got big hits of eucalyptus on the nose but smooth and full taste. Will get a couple of those. Also tried the FLEURON DE LA REBOURGÈRE which I found benefits from not being served too chilled, the flavours become much more pronounced. I Didn’t love the Nero Carbone as much but was still decent and still got the CHÂTEAU BOURDIEU N°1 2018 to try so looking forward to that. Thanks again so much!
