Trim the ends of the turnips. (You will peel them after they cook).
Cook covered with water in a medium saucepan until tender. Depending on the size of your turnips this may take anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Check with a fork. When they are tender crisp drain and let them cool. Peel when cool enough to handle.
You can prepare them to this stage a few hours ahead and finish off when ready to serve. Just let them rest at room temperature.
Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan over medium high heat. Slice the turnips in half vertically. Add the turnips cut side down to the pan. Let them cook undisturbed until they are browned on the bottom, about 8 minutes. Drain off any remaining oil.
Melt the butter in the microwave and add the maple syrup. Pour mixture over the turnips in the pan and cook another 5 minutes or so.
Serve and enjoy!
Notes
Note: This works best with a large skillet so the most possible turnips are in contact with the bottom of the pan.
