Fried Turnips

Equipment

  • Oven proof skillet

Ingredients

  • 4 small turnips (about 1lb)
  • 2 tablespoon ghee or regular butter
  • pinch of dried thyme Optional
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon bread crumbs

Instructions

  • Peel and trim the ends of the turnip. Dice turnip into ½" cubes.
  • Melt the ghee or butter in an oven proof skillet on medium high heat. Add the thyme if using.
  • Add the turnips and allow to fry about 5 minutes without stirring. Stir then allow turnips to fry another 4 minutes or so.
  • Preheat the broiler while turnips are frying. Leave the rack in the mid oven position.
  • When turnips are tender through, sprinkle with salt and the bread crumbs.
  • Put skillet in oven with the broiler for a couple of minutes to allow the bread crumbs to crisp up.
  • Remove and serve immediately.
