Wine Picks LCBO Vintages Release Sept 28, 2019

Two things to think about for the Sept 28, 2019  Vintages release – 1) the upward price trend is starting and will continue to rise now to the new year so think about stocking up when you see good value on offer now;  and 2)  Thanksgiving is only a release away so you may want to stock up from this release.

Good Bets Under $35

Sparkling

 VINTAGES#:  175588  Score 90-91   $19.95

This Méthode Traditionnelle sparkling is getting consistent 90+ scores among various reviewers.  Crisp strawberry, raspberry, apple notes, rich brioche being described; lively mousse.  Good value.

Sweet Wines

 VINTAGES#:  10655   Score 92   $22.95

I am cheating a bit here on the  “under $35” theme but in my own defence  this is a chance to enjoy the classic that is Sauternes for under $35. Sauterne is not always available, let alone at a price we can imagine.  And…  since a little goes a long way you can still get a lot of enjoyment out of the 375 ml bottle. Try this with foie gras, blue cheese or nuts, dried fruits etc.

White Wines

 VINTAGES#:  149302   Score 92   $21.95

I couldn’t help but think about Thanksgiving wine when Vic Harradine’s review in winecurrent.com said  ‘ Alluring aromas of apple pie spice, crème brûlée and sweet vanillin abound on the nose of this gorgeous chardonnay ‘  and  ‘It caresses the palate with a smooth-as-silk river of spiced, baked apple and poached pear while a racy dollop of lemon curd appears on the lengthy lip-smacking finish and aftertaste.’

Whitehaven Pinot Gris 2017   Marlborough, New Zealand
VINTAGES#:  447516  Score 91   $19.95

This is the Pinot Gris that sparked my current love affair with Pinot Gris!  Another awesome Thanksgiving table pick based on Bob Campbell’s comment of ‘Flavoursome pinot gris with nougat, pear, crunchy apple, spice and anise flavours.’  Bob Campbell, MW  ( bobcampbell.nz)

Red Wines

Mountadam Vineyards Patriarch Shiraz 2015  South Australia, Australia VINTAGES#:  906255   Score  97   $29.95

James Halliday of winecompanion.com.au calls this wine compelling and describes the best grapes, from the best vineyard parcels individually fermented and matured and then -you got it- the best barrels blended and held for future release. He has high praise for the balance, bouquet, finish and most importantly the fruit.  Sounds like a compelling deal to me….

Jules Taylor Pinot Noir 2017   Marlborough, New Zealand
VINTAGES#:  329805   Score  94  $24.95

Sam Kim or wineorbit.co.nz describes a classic, elegant NZ Pinot Noir here – a combination of fruity cherry and mushroom tones,  complex, silky and savoury.  His many superlatives have me intrigued especially at this price.
