The LCBO Vintages Release for June 13th, 2020 has a good focus on wines from Spain and lots more Rosés to choose from. California is also featured with what appear to be a few gems from classic regions.
Here are my picks from this release.
Organized Crime Rosé VINTAGES#: 16296 $16.95 Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment, Ontario, Canada is described as bold and forthright, with excellent structure and balance. Sturdy enough to serve with substantial foods or sip on its own.
Stoneleigh Wild Valley Rosé 2019 VINTAGES#: 15267 $19.95 Marlborough, New Zealand. I would pick this for ‘ladies who lunch’ based on Vintages panel descriptors – ‘medium body, dry, snappy red fruit, excellent balance, texture and presence’.
L’Ostal Rosé 2019 VINTAGES#: 450809 $16.95 Midi, France. Grenache and Syrah should produce a fresh and fruity Rosé. This one is described as elegant with red fruit and citrus notes. Should be good value compared to the more savoury Rosés from Provence that are now clocking in in the Mid-20 $$ range.
Vila Nova Loureiro 2018 VINTAGES#: 632547 $14.95 Vinho Verde, Portugal. Loureiro is one of Portugal’s signature white grapes. It is typically light, lively and slightly floral. This one is described as taut, zesty and a bit creamy. This will be a perfect choice for chilled sipping on your deck or dock as summer unfolds. Stocking up…..
Viña Real Fermentado en Barrica Blanco 20187 VINTAGES#: 14056 $17.95 Rioja, Spain. I am partial to white Riojas. Viura is the dominant white grape in Rioja with Malvasia and White Garnacha playing more supporting roles. Expect rich, full bodied, lightly oaked. Luis Gutiérrez gives it a 90 and describes fresh, fruit driven with a spicy twist. (This release is going to be expensive for me as I stock up!)
Santa Carolina Gran Reserva Chardonnay 2017 VINTAGES#: 928580 $18.95 Itata Valley, Chile. Santa Carolina is known as reliable producer while not noted as a premium producer but this one has been given the special treatment and is showing the granite terroir of Itata Valley. Described as ripe and powerful and tremendous value for the money.
OGV Old Garnacha Vines 20167 VINTAGES#: 13633 $16.95 Calatayud, Spain James Suckling gave this little gem a 93 and describes blue fruit with impressive concentration, a creamy texture and a long finish.
Domaine la Décelle Réserve Valréas 2017 VINTAGES#: 14391 $17.00 Rhône, France. Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 gave this a 95. They describe leather, pepper, red berry, elegant tannins and a long, silky finish. All that for $17.00! Sounds like an approachable, substantial pour punching well above its price point.
McManis Zinfandel 2018 VINTAGES#: 256735 $21.95 California, USA. Zinfandel is a fun robust wine and this one comes from Lodi, one of the premium regions for Zinfandel. Great for BBQ ribs, steak, burgers – you name it.
Daou Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 VINTAGES#: 14392 $30.95 California, USA.. This highly rated Cab Sauv from Paso Robles is described with black plum and violet on the nose and black current, spices and vanilla on the palate. Wine Enthusiast gave it a 93 and Editor’s Choice. Drink or hold.
Firriato Chiaramonte Nero D’Avola 2015 VINTAGES#: 121145 $16.95 Sicily, Italy. If you are looking to expand your palate this is a great choice. James Suckling gives it a 93 score and describes dried berry and spice and rose on the nose; velvety and ripe tannins with ‘gorgeous’ fruit. A lot going on in the glass here for $16.95. Drink or hold.
