Wine Picks <$35 from LCBO Vintages Release May 30th, 2020

The May 30, 2020 LCBO Vintages Release is a gold mine for summer Rosés, and some good value wines from Australia and Portugal in particular.


Gruet Brut Sparkling Rosé  VINTAGES#:  15686 $26.95 is touted as an amazing value from a respected Champagne producer who now has a project in New Mexico. Vintage panel describe complex notes of dried berry, strawberry and spice. If the finesse of the traditional method in Champagne carries over this should be worthy or a celebration.


Three of Hearts Rosé is on offer this release. I was impressed with it when I tasted it earlier this year. Three of Hearts Rosé 2018 VINTAGES#:  552562  $19.95 Ontario, Canada

Don’t let the delicate salmon colour and the subtle nose throw you off on this delightful blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.  With a bit of time and attention is offers up a complex nose of light raspberry and strawberry on the nose, topped off with grapefruit and  floral notes.  The palate is subtly fruity and bone dry with nice weight and balance. This well crafted rose is delicious on its own but would pair well with fish, poultry and salads.  Think ahead as well -it is perfect picnic fare as well.  Excellent value. Tasted January 2020. 91

Domaine de Triennes Rosé 2019    VINTAGES#:  409771 19.95 Provence, France will be dry and fresh with apply, cherry, raspberry and a hint of savoury.

Domaine Maby La Forcadière Tavel Rosé 2019    VINTAGES#:  701318 $19.95 Rhône, France is robust and structured with berries, melon and herbal undertones. Perfect for summer lunches under the trees.

Spain has a good value offering in Izadi Larrosa Rosé 2019  VINTAGES#:  490961 $16.95. Made from old vine Grenache with strawberry and delicate spice it has enough acid and structure to pair with food.


Vidal Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2018   VINTAGES#:  12636 $19.95 Marlborough, New Zealand scored 95 in the International Wine Challenge 2019. Described as classic Marlborough with gooseberry, passionfruit and tropical notes. Complex with good structure and concentration. Can’t ask for anything more than that for $19.95!

Terres Secretes Les Preludes Bourgogne Chardonnay 2017  VINTAGES#:  13133 $19.95 Burgundy, France scored 96 in Decanter World Wine Awards, 2019. They describe ripe pear, apricot, citrus and melon but with lean minerality, bright acidity and a very long finish. Another example of a lot going on in the glass for $19.95

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is a perennial favourite of mine. Always clean and well structured and a bargain in the $15-$17 range. La Cave du Coudray Réserve du Chiron Muscadet Sèvre et Maine 2018    VINTAGES#:  413757 $15.95 is a reserve , Sur lie which bodes extra value. Stone fruit, melon, citrus, tropical notes with minerality. This promises to be a rewarding summer luncheon wine or pair with seafood, oysters anytime.


De Bortoli G.S. Pinot Noir 2018    VINTAGES#:  15511 $19.95 Victoria, Australia is described as European style, with earth and cherry tones and hints of smoke. Balanced, restrained with notable structure. jGood value at $19.95.

Mountadam 550 Shiraz 2017
   VINTAGES#:  13001 $17.95 South Australia, Australia has scored a 94 from and the enthusiastic notes describe blue fruits, salty iodine and peppery acid. Savoury, fresh and a hybrid of French style and Aussie fruit.

Hécula always delivers good value. Castaño Hécula Monastrell 2017    VINTAGES#:  718999 $14.95 While this Mourvedre won’t knock your socks off it will be a reliable choice for patio sipping or pairing with light BBQ fare.

John Szabo or Wine Align gave this Provolo Campotorbian Ripasso Valpolicella Superiore 2013    VINTAGES#:  974402 $19.95 a sore of 90 and calls it ‘serious stuff’ with a silky texture good fruit and intensity, and very good length.

Cellar Suggestion

Durigutti Cabernet Franc 2017  VINTAGES#:  14916 $18.95 Mendoza, Argentina Cab Franc is gaining in popularity. This one scored 94 from James Suckling and he describes aromas of rosemary, violets, lavender and citrus with spices. Full bodied with a long succulent finish. Cellar til 2021 and should reward for several years after that as well.

Good value from Portugal in Quinta da Rede Reserva 2015   VINTAGES#:  431742 $17.95 Douro, Portugal. Wine Enthusiast gave it a 92 and describe a powerful, riep wine with rich black plum flavour and great structure. Drink from 2020 but will continue to evolve for another 5 years plus.
