Some surprising values in the LCBO Vintages Release July 10, 2021 including an $15 Sauvignon Blanc Jancis Robinson rates as ‘superb’.

I used to associate Vermouth with Italy but I fell in love with it in Spain! La Copa Vermouth VINTAGES#: 491712 $21.95 Jerez, Spain gets 96 score from Beppi Crosario of theglobeandmail.com and he ventures it is richer than some premium brands that cost twice as much. He describes cinnamon, orange, raisin, leather and nuts. I can’t wait to try this on the rocks with a slice of fresh orange underneath for a refreshing summer apéritif.
A couple of good value rosés standout this release.
Ontario’s own Creekside Rosé 2020 VINTAGES#: 48819 $15.95 Ontario, Canada is running around a 90 score from various reviewers. Enjoy this Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris blend with light summer lunches of seafood and salads. Expect red berry and grapefruit notes.
Izadi Larrosa Garnacha Rosé 2020 VINTAGES#: 490961 $16.95 Rioja, Spain made from 100% Grenache, promises dynamic ‘red fruit, herbs and spice in a fresh elegant package. Lovely dock or deck sipper or pair it with chicken or salads featuring strawberries or raspberries.
Chardonnay fans are in luck this release- it features Cool Climate Chardonnay and an opportunity to either stock up or taste and compare a number of high quality Chardonnays. So much so that I made separate recommendations for a Chardonnay tasting from July 10, 2020 LCBO Vintage Release.
Run -don’t walk if you are a fan of Sauvignon Blanc in general. Sutherland Sauvignon Blanc 2019 VINTAGES#: 203877 $14.95 Elgin, South Africa gets a 17/20 from wine guru Jancis Robinson which relates to Superior. Good enough for me!! She describes a ‘light and dancing’ , ‘delicate, dry wine with some persistence’. ‘Green vegy’ nose and ‘green apple’ palate. Jancis recommends it as an apéritif. You could also serve with BBQ pork or chicken, or green salad.
Portugal is offering another Vinho Verde this release. Muralhas de Monção Vinho Verde 2020 VINTAGES#: 80374 $15.95 Vinho Verde, Portugal will be lively and aromatic with citrus apple and grapefruit notes. Light enough to enjoy on its own or serve with seafood or these Healthy Lemon Meatballs.
White Riojas are often heavy on the Viura varietal, which happens to be the same grape that stars in most Spanish Cavas – Macabeo. It typically offers a rich, full-bodied experience with notes of stone fruits and some minerality. This Viura blend, Nivarius Limited Edition Blanco 2016 Viura (Macabeo) VINTAGES#: 15591 $21.95 got a 97 From Decanter World Wine Awards, 2020 who noted ripe tropical fruit and a hint of smoke on the nose with a broad, rich full-flavoured palate and an impressive finish.
Fans of the sweeter German Riesling style will want to know about Dr. Loosen Blue Slate Riesling Kabinett 2018 VINTAGES#: 160846 $21.95 Mosel, Germany. It is scoring in the low to mid 90’s and promises ripe pair and stone fruit with some minerality on the palate. Clocking in at only 7.5% alcohol it would be perfect for a Sunday brunch with quiche or a jumbo shrimp cocktail!
Bodegas Palacio Glorioso Crianza 2016 VINTAGES#: 340844 $15.95 Rioja, Spain is scoring 89-91 range and is recognized as good value. At this price the Balsamic, tar, black raspberries, cherries, vanilla and finely woven tannins sound like a deal. Enjoy with meat lover’s pizza or BBQ burgers. (Note Bodega Palacio is not related to the iconic Alvaro Palacios.)
Zuccardi Q Malbec 2019 VINTAGES#: 723478 $19.95 Mendoza, Argentina gets a 94 from Patricio Tapia who describes pure fruit, a tense, textured palate and fine, sharp tannins. Well balanced and ‘exuberant’.
Los Clop Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 VINTAGES#: 668327 21.95 Mendoza, Argentina is getting 90-97 scores. All agree it is intense with a purity of fruit and magnificent tannic structure. Enjoy now with steak BBQ or ribs, or cellar a couple more years.
Domaine Martin Côtes du Rhône 20187 VINTAGES#: 18642 $17.95 Rhône, France an 80% Grenache120% Syrah blend got a 95 from Decanter World Wine Awards, 2019. Côtes du Rhône wines are typically fruity and approachable and are best paired with food. Decanter describes a floral, herbal, liquorice nose with juicy blueberry and blackberry on the plate and a long, ‘seductive’ finish. Enjoy with these Ribs with Spicy Blackberry Sauce or, if you are stocking up for fall or winter think about beef stew or roast.
Barolo fans might enjoy Broccardo Il Già-Pi Nebbiolo 2018 VINTAGES#: 496786 $20.95 Piedmont, Italy. This 100% Nebbiolo wine, that Vic Harradine of winecurrent.com says, is full of ‘alluring aromas of floral notes, black plum and exotic incense.’ He notes bramble, berry and cherry on the robust palate with ripe, soft tannins and a long luscious finish. He goes on to suggest that you will be hard pressed to find a better Nebbiolo at this price so – stock up! Wine Geek note: Jeopardy: Langhe is the region that includes Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. However if the vineyards producing the Nebbiolo grapes are not within the DOCg regions then they will not get that specific designation. Answer: Why is this 100% Nebbiolo not called Barolo or Barbaresco?
Châteauneuf-du-Pape fans may enjoy this similar GSM blend from across the river at a fraction of the price. Alain Jaume Clos de Sixte Lirac 2016 VINTAGES#: 76349 $26.95 Rhône, France gets a 93+ from Joe Czerwinski of robertparker.com who describes rips cherry aromas and a lush and concentrated palate. Enjoy now with beef tenderloin or cellar till 2030 if you like.
