Something in every category from this LCBO Vintages Release Feb 8th, 2020 for Valentine wine shoppers.
None of the Sparklings under $35 in this release are getting rave reviews but the 2 below are solid sippers. So if you are looking to pick up a Sparkling last minute for Valentine’s Day the Cava is a fun, simple sparkling that won’t break the bank. The Back 10 Smitten is also relatively simple but has a nice balance of citrus creaminess.
Vilarnau Barcelona Brut Reserva Cava VINTAGES#: 515254 $15.95 Penedès, Spain
Back 10 Smitten Sparkling VINTAGES#: 14440 $24.95 Niagara, Canada
In case you are thinking of strawberries and cream for Valentine’s Day this Canadian rosè would be a perfect accompaniment.
Three of Hearts Rosé 2018 VINTAGES#: 552562 $19.95 Ontario, Canada
Don’t let the delicate salmon colour and the subtle nose throw you off on this delightful blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. With a bit of time and attention is offers up a complex nose of light raspberry and strawberry on the nose, topped off with grapefruit and floral notes. The palate is subtly fruity and bone dry with nice weight and balance. This well crafted rose is delicious on its own but would pair well with fish, poultry and salads. Think ahead as well -it is perfect picnic fare as well. Excellent value. Tasted January 2020. www.thewineloverskitchen.com 91
New Zealand, not surprisingly, has some good value whites. The Pinot Gris (which I am partial to!) is richer and fruitier than its Pinot Grigio Italian cousin. The Sauvignon Blanc is more along the fruit and mineral profile as opposed to the herbal, grassy character.
Soho White Collection Pinot Gris 2018 VINTAGES#: 536169 $19.95 Marlborough, New Zealand
Eradus Sauvignon Blanc 2019 VINTAGES#: 225557 $19.95 Marlborough, New Zealand
Languedoc is always a pretty good bet if you like you wine full bodied and don’t mind a bit of ‘rustic’. This one is particularly good value.
Domaine des Vals Corbières 2017 VINTAGES#: 12981 $14.95 Languedoc, Franc
Petra Hebo Suvereto VINTAGES#: 12094 $24.95, Italy
This Italian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese was my favourite wine of all this I was able to taste from this release. Dried raspberry on the nose. Vibrant red fruit on the palate with a nod to wet stones. It is refreshing, well integrated and nicely structured. This will shine beside braised meat or duck confit. Very good value.
