Wine Picks < $35 for LCBO Vintages Release Jan 11th, 2020

The LCBO Vintages Release Jan 11th, 2020 is full of great value wines after the ‘excesses’ of December! Check out 2 wines on Top 100 lists for under $20!

White Wines

Two Rivers Convergence Sauvignon Blanc 2017

   Marlborough, New Zealand VINTAGES#:  277707 $19.95

Sam Kim from scored this a 94 and describes grapefruit, lime and passionfruit in the profile and calls it hugely appealing, harmonious and wonderfully balanced. All this for under $20!

Vetiver Viura 2014

    Rioja, Spain INTAGES#:  437707 $15.95

Riojas are tremendous value in general. A white Rioja is less common so this is a bit of a treat. White Riojas are usually from the Viura or Malvasia grapes and are usually sturdy and fruity. This one was name #62 in the Wine Spectator 2016 Top 100 Smart Buys. When tasted in 2016 Thomas Matthews of said it needed a bit of time to harmonize and predicted a drinking window through 2024. I think the pear, quince, brioche, chamomile and dried pineapple he mentions are probably perfect about now.

Red Wines

Josh Cellars North Coast Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

California, USA VINTAGES#:  648675 $24.95

Josh Cellars is a reliable bet for good quality at any time so this Resere version at $25 seems like a no brainer. Michael Vaughan of describes spicy, fresh, ripe and intense raspberry-black-cherry-cassis. He scored it 90 points and called it a ‘crowd-pleaser worthy of a detour’.

Ricardo Santos Tercos Bonarda 2015

   Mendoza, Argentina  VINTAGES#:  513721 $15.95

Some wine writes are saying Bonarda is going to be ‘the next big thing’ out of Argentina. Fruitier and less tannic than Malbec, it is Argentina’s second most planted grape. James Suckling gave this a 93 and describes ‘mushroom, blackberry and smoke. Sounds like a great pairing for a roast beef! (And…look at the price!)

Michele Chiarlo Le Orme Barbera d’Asti 2016

Piedmont, Italy    VINTAGES#:  265413 $15.95

This wine ranked #58 in the 2018 Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Best Buys. I love the Barbera grape and Asti is the prime site in Piedmont for it. Kerin O’Keefe gave it a 90 and describes cherry, crushed raspberry and licorice with some forest floor on the nose. Drink in 2020.
