Wine Picks <$35 from LCBO Vintages Release Sept 5 2020

LCBO Vintages Release Sept 5 2020 has some classic old world wines on offer that provide a good chance to compare old world and new world styles. Anybody up for a long weekend wine smack down?

As we get deeper into the year the premium wines start to appear inthe releases. There are still lots of really good value wines in this release but you might want to start thinking about stocking up for the holiday season when you find yourself taken with some of the best buys!

Sparkling Wine

There are 2 Sparkling wines that look like they might be worth laying in in anticipation of upcoming celebrations.

Patriarche Brut Rosé Crémant de Bourgogne    VINTAGES#:  16598 $19.95 Burgundy, France gets a 90 score from Ultimate Wine Challenge 2019 and has a mix of summery red berry fruit and brioche, some stone fruit a hint of toast. It seem to cover off most of the bases you look for in a good Sparkling.

Valldosera Brut Nature Cava VINTAGES#:  311738 $19 Catalunya, Spain gets an 89 from Michael Godel of Cavas are not as refined typically as a French Sparkling but they are sturdy, reliable performers. This one is somewhat rustic with ginger and wet stones. Ripeness of the fruit lends texture.

White Wines

Henry of Pelham Estate Riesling 2019   VINTAGES#:  557165 $19.95 Ontario, Canada showcases Ontario’s flair for Riesling. Crisp, balanced, grapefruit, lemon, lime with a great finish. Complex enough to continue to enjoy through 2025.

Cambria Katherine’s Vineyard Chardonnay 20177  VINTAGES#:  980490 $29.95 California, USA. This gets the #61 spot on Wine Spectator’s Top 100. Well-structured, rich, creamy, fresh, spicy with a good finish and considered to be well worth the price.

Cannonball Chardonnay 2017 VINTAGES#:  311563 $19.95 California, USA comes highly recommended with apple pie, honey toasty oats balanced with some tartness and minerality. The long, toasty finish is what I will look forward to in this one!

Paddy Borthwick Pinot Gris 2019  VINTAGES#:  555516 $19.95 Wairarapa, New Zealand gets a 93 from Sam Kim and describes ripe peach, fresh pear, subtle spice and a succulent palate.

Eradus Sauvignon Blanc 20197   VINTAGES#:  225557$19.95 Marlborough, New Zealand has fabulous fruit according to Sam Kim with an impressive palate, purity and vibrancy. Long, superb finish.

Red Wines

Ironstone Old Vine Zinfandel 2018    VINTAGES#:  951889 $17.95 California, USA is always a reliable bet for Zin fans. Fruit driven with smoke, vanilla and oak.

Compare this to

Masso Antico da Uve Leggermente Appassito Primitivo Salento 2018    VINTAGES#:  12092 $16.95 Puglia, Italy. Old World style with some Appassito (grapes are dried to concentrate flavour) thrown in. Described with red and blue fruit, mint and soft tannic structure. (Probably more food friendly than California).

From the home of the ‘Super Tuscans’ this Cab Sauv/Merlot/Syrah blend is considered ‘ a steal’ at this price. Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato 2018    VINTAGES#:  674135 $24.95 Tuscany, Italy gets a 92 from Monica Larner of She describes supple fruit with black berry/black currants, spice, leather and tobacco. Approachable but food friendly so best enjoyed with a great steak. Drink now through 2026.

Dufouleur Rully 2017   VINTAGES#:  356774 $31.95 Burgundy, France is recognized as some of the greatest value in Burgundy wines. Pinot Noir with good structure, weight, tannin and acidity. Food friendly- so pair with duck or salmon or tenderloin.

Compare to

The classic New World Pinot Noir style from New Zealand with Jackson Estate Vintage Widow Pinot Noir 2015  VINTAGES#:  696294 $27.95 Marlborough, New Zealand. Sam Kim describes dark cherry, spiced plum, mushroom, thyme with spicy/savoury undertones and silky smooth tannins. Drink now.

You may not want to miss out on Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Shiraz 2017  VINTAGES#:  13990 $24.95 New South Wales, Australia that James Halliday of gives a 96. Rich and fruity and Special Value. Another steal at this price.

The Old World classic Syrah of Clairmont Classique Crozes-Hermitage 2018    VINTAGES#:  537811 $24.95 Rhône, France with its wild berry and blackpepper spice.
