I made these for the kick off of our 2018 BBQ season. Okay – the snow cover was gone and it was easy to get to the BBQ. Hubby got lots of kudos for BBQing the burgers amidst high winds and freezing temperatures!
Meanwhile… I was all cozy inside baking up these buns! I had a package of 8 commercial hamburger buns but I was anticipating a hungry crowd! Honestly – I found it easier to make a batch of homemade buns than going to the store for just one item.
I usually have a 10 or 20 pound bag of flour in my pantry at any given time so it is a no brainer if you are home to throw 7 ingredients together and bake up a batch of buns. I chose to put shredded cheese on top during the last 6 minutes.
You know me – I am always looking at different angles. You could top them with sesame seeds, poppy seeds or caramelized onions. Or you could brush them with this Garlic Butter topping like the Olive Garden Bread Rolls have.
Making the Buns
The dough cycle for my machine takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. I don’t mind the time if I am puttering around the house anyway. When the dough cycle is done and you are going to divide the dough into bun size portions I like to use a Pastry Scraper and Cutter like this one. It is great for past making as well when you want clean precise cuts on your dough.OXO 73281 BK Good Grips Dough Scraper

I do not have a precise eye so I don’t wing the ‘equal portioning’ step. I weigh the dough when I halve it and again when I cut the halves into fours. By the time the fourths go to eighths I free wheel it but you even them I am not guaranteed totally equal portions!
Once the buns are done the second rise you are going to brush the tops with a bit of melted butter. If you are using sesame seeds or poppy seeds or caramelized onions you can sprinkle them on right after the butter brushing. If using cheese wait to add the cheese until the last 6 minutes of baking so the cheese doesn’t over cook.
These homemade buns were gone before anyone chose a store-bought one!
