Golden Milk Latte

Got acid reflux?  Joint pain? Need to boost your immune system? This Golden Milk Latte might just be the answer you’ve been looking for!

I first saw turmeric root on the Dr. Oz show and then I started seeing it in my grocery store.  It is packaged up with several pieces of root on a little foam tray.  The trays are usually $2-$3 but they make a lot.  The turmeric, like ginger will keep in a dry, dark place for several days. I have had it start to mold so I have also frozen whatever I didn’t need immediately.


Freezing the turmeric and the ginger makes them a bit soggy but it doesn’t alter the taste or texture by the time they are blended into this latte.

I have made the lattes with coconut milk and almond milk. They are fine so you can use whatever suits your taste.  The first time I made it with 1 cup of 5% cream and 3 cups of water.  I like the touch of  creaminess best.  I have also made the latte with almond milk and added a touch of cream like you would to a cup of coffee.  Now I make with cream and water, almond milk or 2% milk-whatever I need to use up in the fridge.

Health Benefits

The health benefits of Turmeric or Curcuma longa, are derived primarily from its curcumin components. While Curcumin has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine as an anti-inflammatory, it is currently the subject of much research and clinical trials to try to quantify its effects objectively.

Curcumin and phenolic levels in fresh turmeric vs dried, ground turmeric are not significantly different if the dried, ground version has been dried using opitmal conditions. Optimal conditions are at a at temperature of 50-100 degrees C. Longer lengths of drying time also tended to reduce the beneficial components.

Ginger is in the same Zingiberaceae family as Turmeric (along with Cardamom).  It is recognized to relieve nausea and promote digestive health. It is also reputed to relieve muscle soreness from exercise and reduce inflammation.  You can check out more details at this Medical News Today site.

The dash of black pepper in the recipe is there because black pepper increases the absorption rate of the curcumin in your body.

This recipe makes about 4 cups or 4 servings.  I store mine in a container in the fridge and just shake it well and warm a cup  in the microwave when I am ready for another!

Hint- Turmeric stains a very bright yellow so you may want to hold the root with rubber gloves. (I hold it with a small sandwich bag).  You will want to rinse everything right away – your cutting board if using, blender etc. Avoid plastic if possible.

Overall this warm and spicy latte is comforting to drink and your body will thank you for it. You have nothing to lose and you may be boosting your immune system, reducing acid reflux and inflammation!

Servings: 4 cups


  • 4 inches fresh turmeric root peeled and cut into rough chunks (see Note 1 for dried turmeric)
  • 4 inches fresh ginger root peeled and cut into rough chunks
  • 8 pitted dates
  • 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 4 cups milk (substitute non-dairy of your choice if desired)


  • Mix all ingredients in a high powered blender and blend til smooth. Pour into mug(s) and heat in microwave about 90 seconds. Leave lots of head space in your cup so it doesn't bubble over.
  • Store any excess if fridge and reheat as required.


Note 1- If using dried turmeric, combine 1/4 cup of ground turmeric and 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan and simmer until it reduces to a thick paste.  Cool and store in the fridge.  For 4 servings replace the fresh turmeric with 2 teaspoons of paste.
