Wine Picks LCBO Release June 10, 2016

This release features some Australian and French wines, some Rosés, some Canadian.  In short – a little bit o’ this and a little bit o’ that.

Here are the top scorers from around the web in the $15 – $35 range.

White

Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (South Africa)

483750  Score 95 $21.95

Decanter Wine Award Notes say this is ‘Piercingly fresh on the nose, with heady aromatics of green pea, asparagus and flinty, grey mineral. Zippy and spritzy on the palate, vibrantly fresh with lime and lemon zest, laced with a cut green grass note and braced by a focused, precise acidity.’

Hedges H.I.P. Dionysus Vineyard Chardonnay  2013 (USA, Washington)

488528  Score 90  $19.95

Vintage panel notes say ‘This is a fresh, lively and balanced wine with intense notes of pear, apple, melon, lemon and oak. There is a lovely mineral undertone to the nose and palate.’

Schloss Shonborn Hattenheim Nusbrunnen Riesling Kabinett 2008

496497  Score 91  $19.95

Vintage notes are saying ‘This is a great opportunity to enjoy a mature Riesling in all its glory. Evocative aromas of crushed rocks, pressed flowers, applesauce, pear drop and lime set the scene.  The palate is semi-sweet and underscored by elegant acidity and minerality.  Enjoy over the next year or two with schnitzel cordon bleu, or grilled pork sausages topped with blue cheese and sauerkraut.’

Red

Marqués de Murrieta Finca Ygay Reserva 2012

209148  Score 95  $29.95

Jame Suckling of jamessuckling.com describes ‘terrific aromas of currants, berries, cinnamon and perfume. Full body, ultrafine tannins and a dens palate. Superb length and refinement. ….superb quality considering the price.’   Doesn’t get much better than that folks!

M. Chapoutier les Vignes de Bila-Haut Cotes du Roussillon Villages 2015

168716 Score 91-93 $15.95

Jeb Dunnock is calling this ‘the jaw-dropper in the lineup’… and look at the price! Jeb’s tasting notes call this incredible value… ‘rich, concentrated and serious.. pure notes of blackberries, black raspberries, crushed rock and melted licorice. Thick, unctuous and luxuriously textured..’

Journey’s End Shiraz 2012 (South Africa)

337642  Score 91 $20.95

Vintage panel tasting notes say ‘This one is juicy and long with impressive black fruit, cherries and a tantalizing pepper spice note. ‘

Intriga Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

57901  Score 92  $22.95

James Suckling of jamessuckling.com calls this ‘A beautiful red with ripe fruit, chocolate and walnut aromas and flavours. Full body, round tannins. Delicious finish.’

Rosé

Chateau Léoube Rosé de Léoube 2016  (France)

4911– Score 91  $25.95

Vintage tasting notes says ‘It opens with lovely notions of ripe cantaloupe, nectarine, clementine and lavender, and the palate is a promenade of sunny fruit, star-bright acidity and elegantly smooth texture transitioning to savoury wild herbs and tangy citrus-peel notes on the finish.’

Chateau Val Joanis Tradition Rosé 2016

707281  Score 90   $15.95

Vintage notes say ‘The consistent red fruit and blossoms in this rosé from Chateau Val Joanis have made it a bit of a tradition here at Vintages.. A fine and finessed sipper, this is also a serious rosé with the structure and texture to pair with everything from shellfish to salmon, barbecued chicken or grilled pork ribs.’

Cellar Suggestions

Lionel Osmin & Cie CahorsMalbec 2012 (France)

247544   Score 90   $16.95

Roger Voss of Wine Enthusiast says ‘This is a big wine in all senses. Powerful and dense fruits form the basis of solid tannins that are still masking the full-bodied, rich berry fruits. It is still developing and needing aging. Drink from 2018.’

Creekside Laura’s Red 2012 (Niagara, Canada)

117960  Score 90  $19.95

David Lawrason of winealign.com  says ‘this is one of the better value ‘Bordeaux’ blends in the market. It …has very good flavour depth and intensity. Good energy here, with young slightly green tannin. Expect ripe blackberry, fresh herbs, well honed oak and some meatiness. The length is very good to excellent. Best 2018 to 2023.’
